Homemade Body Scrub

Homemade Body Scrub

It was my sister who started me off thinking about homemade beauty products.
She was making a reviving and cellulite busting coffee and coconut oil body scrub to use in her pre-wedding day body boost. It looked so easy to make that I thought I would have a go.

The methods
The base of both of these scrubs is coconut oil. You can buy this from health stores but I actually got mine from Tesco so I think you can find it in some supermarkets. This is a substitute oil used in cooking but it has many other uses. I used it all through my pregnancies and use it as a moisturiser on my body. It is a beautiful natural oil that is amazing for your skin.
To make your scrubs I really just used what I had in the house. Fresh coffee was from the tub and the sugar was a general caster sugar. I don't think it particularly matters but you can find out if one sugar is better than the other if you want.

For the coffee and coconut oil scrub you simply use 1/4 cup of pre-soaked coffee granuals (just the leftovers from a pot of coffee will do) and 1/2 cup of pure coconut oil. Melt the coconut oil and strain off the coffee to get rid off most of the liquid. Then place the coffee in a jar and pour the oil over the top mixing as you go. The coffee will settle in the bottom so when you leave it to cool it will re-set so keep giving it a stir so that it mixes it up a bit more. Then just use in the shower and it should help bring your skin back to life and reduce cellulite!

Another scrub I have made is a sugar scrub using lavender infused sugar and coconut oil. Use 3/4 cup of sugar and 1/4 cup of oil. Mix together in a bowl then put into a sealable jar. You can then drop a few drops of lavender oil in or like me, my sugar is infused so the smell is coming from that already. You should be able to keep these for up to two months.

The results
On using both on my hands when I was making them I did add a spoon of coffee and sugar to each again to make then nice and abrasive. The coffee one is more oily but it doesn't make your skin feel greasy. The sugar scrub is lovely as it is almost powder like. Both have their individual smells so are pleasant if you like lavender or coffee. It is the coconut smell that is left on the skin for a longer period though. I just rinsed off with water and towel dried and you can tell that it is just the oil left soaking into your skin and it takes a few seconds before you don't even notice it. No staining on towels or clothes so these scrubs are just perfect!

This is such a lovely way to make a bit of home pampering and is also a great idea for presents. I found the sugar scrub the easiest but that was because it was ready quicker. They are both really easy and you can just waste some time just trying out different scents and mixtures.
